Sargassum in Riviera Maya: What Travelers Need to Know
Waw Editorial··5 min

Sargassum is a naturally occurring brown seaweed that washes ashore on the Caribbean coast, typically between April and October, with peaks in June-August. It is not dangerous but can make beaches unsightly and smelly.
Least affected areas: the Caribbean-facing beaches of Isla Mujeres, Holbox (Gulf side), Cozumel's leeward coast and Cancún's north strip.
Backup plan: cenotes, ruins and inland experiences are unaffected. A day at a Chichén Itzá guided tour or a cenote adventure is a perfect sargassum-day itinerary.
Our team monitors sargassum reports weekly and adjusts recommendations. Reservations are managed by Waw Promotions LLC; every excursion is delivered on the ground by our official local operator.
