Holbox Island: The Complete Guide
Waw Editorial··9 min

Holbox is a narrow, sandy island in the Gulf of Mexico, north of the Yucatán peninsula. No cars, no chains — just golf carts, small hotels and pastel-coloured streets.
Getting there: drive or shuttle to Chiquilá (about 2.5 hours from Cancún), then a 30-minute ferry.
When to go: whale sharks appear May-September, flamingos are year-round, sargassum is minimal thanks to the Gulf-facing location.
Don't miss: Punta Cocos at sunset, the bioluminescence tour after dark, and a boat trip to Isla Pájaros for flamingos.
We recommend at least one overnight — a day trip does not do the island justice. The Holbox calm experience includes transport and hotel so you can focus on the island itself.
